What is an MKV video file?

MKV is a video container that holds one or more video streams, audio tracks, and optional subtitles. Different containers support different codecs, so compatibility depends on both the wrapper AND what is inside it.
What does the Matroska container actually give an MKV file?

An extensible one. Matroska stores each stream as an independent element with its own metadata, so an MKV has no fixed idea of how many audio tracks, subtitle tracks, chapters or attachments it is allowed to carry. The cost is that a general-purpose device cannot assume anything about the contents, which is why hardware players are far pickier about it than desktop software is. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold.
Why do ripping tools default to MKV?

Because it holds everything a disc contains without having to throw any of it away — every audio language, every subtitle track, the chapter list — in one file. That is the right default when the goal is a faithful copy of the original, and the wrong one when the file has to play on a device that only understands a delivery format. MKV is the archival container of choice because it stores unlimited audio tracks, soft subtitles, chapter markers and cover art in one file.
Why will my browser not play an MKV file?

Browsers ship decoders for a deliberately short list of formats, and MKV is not on it — the licensing, the codec variety it permits, or simply its age keeps it out. The file is not broken and a desktop player will open it, but nothing you do to the page will make a browser render it. Converting to a web-native container is the only reliable route to inline playback. MKV has almost no native hardware support — phones, browsers and TVs usually need VLC or a remux before they will play it.
Why does MKV playback stutter or run hot on older machines?

Because it is being decoded in software. Hardware video decoders only cover a fixed list of formats, and MKV is outside it on most devices, so every frame is reconstructed by the CPU instead. On a current desktop that is merely wasteful; on a phone, an older laptop or a smart TV it shows up as dropped frames, fan noise and battery drain. Converting to a hardware-supported format removes the problem entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file.
Are subtitles inside an MKV selectable, or burned into the picture?

Selectable, if they were added properly. MKV carries subtitles as their own stream alongside the video, so the viewer can switch languages, turn them off, or restyle them in a player that supports it. Burned-in subtitles are also possible — they are just pixels in the frame — but they are permanent, and there is rarely a reason to choose them when the container supports the real thing.
Can one MKV file hold several audio tracks?

Yes — an original-language mix, a dub and a commentary can all sit in the same file with the player switching between them. Two cautions: many phone and television players expose only the first track however many are present, and a conversion into a format without real multi-track support keeps one track and drops the rest. Pick the track you want before converting, rather than discovering afterwards which one survived.
Does MKV keep chapter markers?

It does — chapters live in the container metadata, so a long recording can be navigated by section instead of by dragging a progress bar. They survive a rewrap into another chapter-aware format and are dropped, silently, by one that has nowhere to put them. If chapters matter, that is worth checking before you pick the output format rather than after.
Why convert MKV to another video format?

Convert MKV to MP4 when you need universal playback — web browsers, mobile devices, smart TVs and editing apps all play MP4 natively. Convert to WebM for web embedding where smaller file size matters. Convert to MOV when working in Final Cut or other Apple-native pipelines.
Does MKV conversion re-encode the video?

When the source codec inside MKV is compatible with the target container we remux without re-encoding (fast, lossless). When the codec must change (for example HEVC to H.264) the video is re-encoded — slower, with a small generational quality cost.
