How do I extract individual frames from MKV as JPG images?

Upload the MKV file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the MKV video stream, encoded as a separate JPG file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Will subtitles show up in the JPG frames I extract?

Not if they are a real subtitle track. An MKV keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a JPG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an MKV are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Can I pull one JPG out of each chapter of the MKV?

Not as a single button, but the MKV makes it straightforward: chapter marks are stored in the container as named timestamps, so read the chapter list off the file and paste those times into the timestamp field. You get one JPG per chapter, in order, which is the usual way of building thumbnails for a long recording. Sources with no chapter marks leave you picking scenes by eye instead. MKV is the archival container of choice because it stores unlimited audio tracks, soft subtitles, chapter markers and cover art in one file.
What quality setting should I use for the JPG output?

Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one used unless you change it — visually indistinguishable from the source at normal viewing distance, at roughly a fifth of the size of a lossless equivalent. Push to 95 for anything that will be edited or printed, and drop to 70 for thumbnails where size dominates. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded.
At what resolution do the extracted JPG images come out?

Same resolution as the source MKV: a 1080p MKV produces 1920x1080 JPG frames, a 4K MKV produces 3840x2160 JPG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of an MKV as JPG?

Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute MKV produces 1,800 JPG frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. For longer clips, prefer the "1 per second" preset (60 frames per minute) or pick specific timestamps. An hour of MKV at every-frame would produce ~100,000 JPG images.
Will the JPG frames preserve the MKV colour grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source MKV stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a JPG that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
How big is one extracted JPG frame on disk?

Depends on resolution and JPG codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p MKV is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
Does the extracted JPG keep camera EXIF metadata?

An MKV container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the JPG files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
How long does frame extraction from MKV to JPG take?

Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute MKV -> JPG bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the JPG encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the MKV demuxer.
Can I extract frames at exact timestamps inside the MKV video?
