How do I extract just the audio track from MKV as M4A?

Upload the MKV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MKV container, then transcodes it into M4A. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the M4A codec itself introduces. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. M4A is an MP4 container carrying audio only, and it is what iTunes, Apple Music and the iPhone Voice Memos app produce.
Is converting MKV to M4A a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the M4A encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the M4A from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip.
Can I tag the M4A with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MKV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. M4A carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. M4A keeps rich iTunes-style metadata, chapters and artwork intact, and is the native audio format across every Apple device.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MKV has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your MKV carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the M4A file use?

Default M4A bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless M4A targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from MKV to M4A reduce my audio quality?

If the M4A format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If M4A is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MKV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted M4A keep the MKV sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MKV audio becomes 48 kHz M4A audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality M4A) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract M4A audio from a folder of MKV files?

How long does extracting M4A from a 1-hour MKV take?

Audio demux + transcode runs much faster than video re-encoding — typically 5-15% of source duration. A 1-hour MKV -> M4A finishes in 3-9 minutes on the standard pipeline. If the M4A codec matches the source codec already in the MKV (common for AAC inside MKV / MP4), it is a pure remux and runs in seconds.
Will the M4A file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the MKV file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the M4A container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged MKV produces untagged M4A — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
Is my MKV private during audio extraction?

Why does my M4A have silent gaps or wrong audio?

Almost always a stream-index mismatch — your MKV had a multi-track audio layout and we extracted the wrong stream (e.g. the silent descriptive audio track instead of the main mix). Re-run with the advanced "audio stream" option set to the right index, or pick "all streams" to extract every track as a separate M4A file.
