How do I extract just the audio track from MKV as MP3?

Upload the MKV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MKV container, then transcodes it into MP3. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the MP3 codec itself introduces. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Is converting MKV to MP3 a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Can I tag the MP3 with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MKV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
What happens to multichannel audio when converting MKV to MP3?

It is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MKV has several?

What bitrate does the MP3 file use?

Default MP3 bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless MP3 targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from MKV to MP3 reduce my audio quality?

If the MP3 format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MKV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted MP3 keep the MKV sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MKV audio becomes 48 kHz MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality MP3) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract MP3 audio from a folder of MKV files?

Audio demux + transcode runs much faster than video re-encoding — typically 5-15% of source duration. A 1-hour MKV -> MP3 finishes in 3-9 minutes on the standard pipeline. If the MP3 codec matches the source codec already in the MKV (common for AAC inside MKV / MP4), it is a pure remux and runs in seconds.
Will the MP3 file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the MKV file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the MP3 container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged MKV produces untagged MP3 — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
