How do I extract just the audio track from MKV as Opus?

Upload the MKV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MKV container, then transcodes it into Opus. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the Opus codec itself introduces. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. Opus is an IETF standard from 2012 that merged Skype’s SILK speech codec with Xiph’s CELT music codec into one design.
Is converting MKV to Opus a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the Opus encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the Opus from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. Opus scales from 6 kbps mono speech to 510 kbps stereo music in the same bitstream and switches modes automatically.
Can I tag the Opus with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MKV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. Opus carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Opus is the best-sounding lossy codec at low bitrates by a clear margin, and it powers WhatsApp voice notes, Discord and WebRTC.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MKV has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your MKV carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the Opus file use?

Default Opus bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless Opus targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from MKV to Opus reduce my audio quality?

If the Opus format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If Opus is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MKV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted Opus keep the MKV sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MKV audio becomes 48 kHz Opus audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality Opus) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract Opus audio from a folder of MKV files?

Will the Opus file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the MKV file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the Opus container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged MKV produces untagged Opus — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
Is my MKV private during audio extraction?

Why does my Opus have silent gaps or wrong audio?

Almost always a stream-index mismatch — your MKV had a multi-track audio layout and we extracted the wrong stream (e.g. the silent descriptive audio track instead of the main mix). Re-run with the advanced "audio stream" option set to the right index, or pick "all streams" to extract every track as a separate Opus file.
