How do I extract just the audio track from MKV as AMR?

Upload the MKV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MKV container, then transcodes it into AMR. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the AMR codec itself introduces. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. AMR is Adaptive Multi-Rate, the speech codec 3GPP standardised for GSM voice calls and mobile voice recorders.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the AMR encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the AMR from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. AMR is a narrowband speech codec running between 4.75 and 12.2 kbps, modelling the human vocal tract rather than the full audio spectrum.
It is folded down to stereo, because AMR has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. AMR destroys music: its 8 kHz bandwidth removes everything above telephone frequencies, and no amount of re-encoding brings it back.
Because one side of it is a speech codec rather than a music codec. It models the human vocal tract and discards everything outside telephone bandwidth, which is fine for a voice memo and destructive for anything with instruments in it. Converting away from it cannot restore the missing frequencies — they were never encoded in the first place. MKV has almost no native hardware support — phones, browsers and TVs usually need VLC or a remux before they will play it.
By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your MKV carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
Default AMR bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless AMR targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
If the AMR format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If AMR is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MKV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
By default yes — 48 kHz MKV audio becomes 48 kHz AMR audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality AMR) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
