How do I extract just the audio track from MKV as WMA?

Upload the MKV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MKV container, then transcodes it into WMA. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the WMA codec itself introduces. MKV is Matroska, an open container designed in 2002 with no licensing restrictions and no ceiling on what it can hold. WMA is Windows Media Audio, Microsoft’s answer to MP3, launched in 1999 and bundled with every Windows install of that era.
Is converting MKV to WMA a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the WMA encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the WMA from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MKV is codec-agnostic: H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video sit happily beside AAC, FLAC, Opus, DTS or Dolby audio in the same file. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered.
Can I tag the WMA with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MKV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. WMA carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. WMA compressed better than contemporary MP3 encoders and remains readable by Windows Media Player and old PlaysForSure devices.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MKV has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your MKV carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the WMA file use?

Default WMA bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless WMA targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from MKV to WMA reduce my audio quality?

If the WMA format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If WMA is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MKV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted WMA keep the MKV sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MKV audio becomes 48 kHz WMA audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality WMA) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.

Will the WMA file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the MKV file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the WMA container where the format supports tags.
