How do I extract individual frames from AV1 as BMP images?

Upload the AV1 file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the AV1 video stream, encoded as a separate BMP file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. AV1 is the royalty-free video codec the Alliance for Open Media released in 2018 as the successor to VP9. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Will subtitles show up in the BMP frames I extract?

Not if they are a real subtitle track. An AV1 keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a BMP has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an AV1 are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Can I pull one BMP out of each chapter of the AV1?

Not as a single button, but the AV1 makes it straightforward: chapter marks are stored in the container as named timestamps, so read the chapter list off the file and paste those times into the timestamp field. You get one BMP per chapter, in order, which is the usual way of building thumbnails for a long recording. Sources with no chapter marks leave you picking scenes by eye instead. AV1 delivers roughly 30% better compression than H.264 at the same quality and carries no licence fees, which is why YouTube and Netflix push it.
How big will the BMP files be?

Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
At what resolution do the extracted BMP images come out?

Same resolution as the source AV1: a 1080p AV1 produces 1920x1080 BMP frames, a 4K AV1 produces 3840x2160 BMP frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of an AV1 as BMP?

Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute AV1 produces 1,800 BMP frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. For longer clips, prefer the "1 per second" preset (60 frames per minute) or pick specific timestamps. An hour of AV1 at every-frame would produce ~100,000 BMP images.
Will the BMP frames preserve the AV1 colour grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source AV1 stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a BMP that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
How big is one extracted BMP frame on disk?

Depends on resolution and BMP codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p AV1 is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
Does the extracted BMP keep camera EXIF metadata?

An AV1 container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the BMP files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
