Does JPG to BMP conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when BMP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of BMP. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Does converting JPG to BMP restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPG are ordinary pixel data now, and BMP preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. BMP needs no decoder library at all, so it remains the safe interchange format for embedded systems and legacy Windows tooling. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.
Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to BMP?

It is converted to sRGB, because BMP has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original JPG rather than the BMP. BMP is gigantic — a 12-megapixel photo is around 36 MB — and no browser treats it as a sane web format.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting JPG to BMP?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the BMP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of JPG files to BMP at once?
