AV1 to JPG Conversion FAQ
How do I extract individual frames from AV1 as JPG images?
+
Upload the AV1 and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. AV1 is the royalty-free video codec the Alliance for Open Media released in 2018 as the successor to VP9. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Will subtitles show up in the JPG frames I extract?
+
Not if they are a real subtitle track. An AV1 keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a JPG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an AV1 are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
At what resolution do the extracted JPG images come out?
+
Same resolution as the source AV1: a 1080p AV1 produces 1920x1080 JPG frames, a 4K AV1 produces 3840x2160 JPG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of an AV1 as JPG?
+
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 JPG images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the JPG frames preserve the AV1 colour grading?
+
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the AV1 as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR AV1 can look flat or washed out as a JPG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
How long does frame extraction from AV1 to JPG take?
+
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Is my AV1 private during frame extraction?
+
Yes. Uploaded AV1 files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted JPG frames blurry?
+
Almost always motion blur baked into the source AV1 (the camera or subject was moving while that frame was captured). Try picking timestamps from static scenes, or extract several adjacent frames and pick the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that is not in the original AV1.
Can the converter pick one frame per scene change in the AV1?
+
No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.
