PNG to JPG Conversion FAQ
Does PNG to JPG conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when JPG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of JPG. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
How much quality will I lose going from PNG to JPG?
+
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the PNG as the master and regenerate the JPG from it whenever you need a new size. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting PNG to JPG?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the JPG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of PNG files to JPG at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Are my PNG files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded PNG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted JPG file bigger or smaller than expected?
+
A PNG file with strong compression (heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded into a lossless JPG (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless PNG often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG/WebP. The ratio depends on the image content (photos compress differently from line-art or screenshots). PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.
