Does PNG to WebP conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when WebP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of WebP. WebP is Google’s 2010 image format, built from the VP8 keyframe encoder and intended to replace JPG, PNG and GIF at once.
How much quality will I lose going from PNG to WebP?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the WebP repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the PNG as the master and regenerate the WebP from it whenever you need a new size. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting PNG to WebP?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the WebP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of PNG files to WebP at once?

Are my PNG files private during conversion?

Yes. Uploaded PNG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted WebP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why is my converted WebP file bigger or smaller than expected?

A PNG file with strong compression (heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded into a lossless WebP (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless PNG often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG/WebP. The ratio depends on the image content (photos compress differently from line-art or screenshots). PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.
