Does GIF to WebP conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when WebP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of WebP. WebP is Google’s 2010 image format, built from the VP8 keyframe encoder and intended to replace JPG, PNG and GIF at once.
How much quality will I lose going from GIF to WebP?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the WebP repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the GIF as the master and regenerate the WebP from it whenever you need a new size. GIF animation plays absolutely everywhere — email clients, forums, chat apps and browsers all render it with no codec negotiation. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting GIF to WebP?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the WebP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of GIF files to WebP at once?

Are my GIF files private during conversion?

Why is my converted WebP file bigger or smaller than expected?

A GIF file with strong compression (heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded into a lossless WebP (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless GIF often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG/WebP. The ratio depends on the image content (photos compress differently from line-art or screenshots). GIF’s 256-colour ceiling wrecks gradients and video stills, and its file sizes for animation are an order of magnitude worse than WebP or MP4. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.
