Why is my converted TIFF file bigger or smaller than expected?

A PNG file with strong compression (heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded into a lossless TIFF (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless PNG often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG/WebP. The ratio depends on the image content (photos compress differently from line-art or screenshots). PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP. TIFF’s flexibility is its weakness — two TIFFs can be structured so differently that software reading one fails on the other — and files are large.
