TIFF to WebP Conversion FAQ
Does TIFF to WebP conversion preserve transparency?
+
Transparency survives when WebP is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of WebP. WebP is Google’s 2010 image format, built from the VP8 keyframe encoder and intended to replace JPG, PNG and GIF at once.
What happens to the layers in my TIFF file?
+
They are flattened, permanently, into one composited image. Blend modes, masks, adjustment layers and editable text are all resolved into final pixels because WebP has no structure to hold them. Keep the TIFF as the working master and treat the WebP strictly as an export. TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require. WebP is still second-class outside the browser — print workflows, older Office builds and some phone galleries do not accept it.
How much quality will I lose going from TIFF to WebP?
+
At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the WebP repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the TIFF as the master and regenerate the WebP from it whenever you need a new size. WebP offers both lossy and lossless modes, with alpha transparency and animation available in either.
Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to WebP?
+
It is converted to sRGB, because WebP has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original TIFF rather than the WebP.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting TIFF to WebP?
+
In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the WebP. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of TIFF files to WebP at once?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Are my TIFF files private during conversion?
+
Yes. Uploaded TIFF files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted WebP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
