M4V is Apple's QuickTime container. iPhones, iPads and Macs record video into M4V by default. The format supports H.264, HEVC, ProRes, multiple audio tracks, captions and chapter markers. M4V keeps chapter markers, artwork and subtitle tracks in the shape the Apple TV app expects, which plain MP4 often loses.
Is an M4V file the same thing as an MP4 underneath?

M4V is built from the same ISO Base Media File Format box layout MP4 uses — a tree of atoms holding the media data plus an index that says where each frame starts. That is why converting between them is usually a rewrap rather than a re-encode: the streams are copied across untouched and only the wrapper is rewritten, which takes seconds even on a feature-length file. Why do purchases arrive as M4V?
