M4V to Image Conversion FAQ

How do I extract individual frames from M4V as Image images?
+
Upload the M4V and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one Image from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as an Image image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. M4V is Apple’s variant of MP4, used by iTunes and the Apple TV app for films and TV episodes. Image here is a generic target: the converter picks a sensible raster format for the source rather than forcing one on you.
Not if they are a real subtitle track. An M4V keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as an Image has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an M4V are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the Image later without changing format again. Choosing the target automatically means you get a file that opens anywhere without having to reason about codecs first.
Larger than you might expect, because Image keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. A multi-page source produces one image per page, each as a separate download.
Same resolution as the source M4V: a 1080p M4V produces 1920x1080 Image frames, a 4K M4V produces 3840x2160 Image frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 Image images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the M4V as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR M4V can look flat or washed out as an Image. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Yes. Uploaded M4V files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted Image are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.

M4V

M4V is an Apple variant of MP4 that may carry FairPlay DRM, which is what stops some players from opening it.
