M4V to AUDIO Conversion FAQ

How do I extract just the audio track from M4V as AUDIO?
+
Upload the M4V file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the M4V container, then transcodes it into AUDIO. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the AUDIO codec itself introduces. M4V is Apple’s variant of MP4, used by iTunes and the Apple TV app for films and TV episodes. Audio here is a generic target: the converter extracts the sound and picks a widely-playable encoding for it.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the AUDIO encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the AUDIO from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. Structurally an M4V is an MP4 — H.264 or HEVC with AAC — with optional Apple FairPlay DRM and iTunes chapter metadata. Output defaults to MP3 at 192 kbps, which is transparent for most material and readable by every device.
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over M4V, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. AUDIO carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Choosing the target automatically is the fastest path when all you want is the sound out of a file, with no codec decisions to make.
DRM. A subset of M4V files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. DRM-protected M4V purchases cannot be converted by anything; only unprotected M4V files are convertible, and non-Apple players often need the extension renamed.
One track, picked automatically: normally the main one, the track with the most channels. This page has no setting to choose a different track and does not list the tracks in the file. If you need commentary or a dub instead, remux the M4V with that track first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
A lossy AUDIO is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless AUDIO (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
If the AUDIO format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If AUDIO is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The M4V container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
By default yes — 48 kHz M4V audio becomes 48 kHz AUDIO, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality AUDIO) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Yes. Uploaded M4V files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted AUDIO are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.

M4V

M4V is an Apple variant of MP4 that may carry FairPlay DRM, which is what stops some players from opening it.

AUDIO

Audio is the family target: pick it when you want the sound on its own and let the converter choose a widely supported track format.
