How do I extract just the audio track from VOB as MP3?

Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the MP3 codec itself introduces. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added. Is converting VOB to MP3 a second round of lossy compression?

Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. A VOB holds MPEG-2 video, AC-3 or PCM audio, and DVD subpicture subtitle streams, split into 1 GB segments by the DVD spec. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Can I tag the MP3 with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over VOB, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
What happens to multichannel audio when converting VOB to MP3?

It is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
Why will some of my VOB files not convert?

DRM. A subset of VOB files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. VOB is split across files, may be CSS-encrypted, and carries navigation packets that confuse general-purpose players.
Which audio track gets extracted when my VOB has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your VOB carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the MP3 file use?

Default MP3 bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless MP3 targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from VOB to MP3 reduce my audio quality?

If the MP3 format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The VOB container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted MP3 keep the VOB sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz VOB audio becomes 48 kHz MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality MP3) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.

Will the MP3 file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the VOB file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the MP3 container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged VOB produces untagged MP3 — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
