How do I extract individual frames from VOB as BMP images?

Upload the VOB file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the VOB video stream, encoded as a separate BMP file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Because the source is interlaced. VOB content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Not if they are a real subtitle track. A VOB keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a BMP has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became a VOB are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Not as a single button, but the VOB makes it straightforward: chapter marks are stored in the container as named timestamps, so read the chapter list off the file and paste those times into the timestamp field. You get one BMP per chapter, in order, which is the usual way of building thumbnails for a long recording. Sources with no chapter marks leave you picking scenes by eye instead. VOB preserves the whole DVD payload — multiple angles, multiple audio languages and subtitle tracks all survive inside it.
Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
Same resolution as the source VOB: a 1080p VOB produces 1920x1080 BMP frames, a 4K VOB produces 3840x2160 BMP frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute VOB produces 1,800 BMP frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. For longer clips, prefer the "1 per second" preset (60 frames per minute) or pick specific timestamps. An hour of VOB at every-frame would produce ~100,000 BMP images.
Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source VOB stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a BMP that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
Depends on resolution and BMP codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p VOB is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
A VOB container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the BMP files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute VOB -> BMP bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the BMP encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the VOB demuxer.
