How do I extract individual frames from VOB as PNG images?

Upload the VOB file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the VOB video stream, encoded as a separate PNG file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. VOB is the Video Object container found in the VIDEO_TS folder of every DVD — an MPEG-2 program stream with DVD-specific navigation data added. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format.
Why do my extracted frames have horizontal lines through them?

Because the source is interlaced. VOB content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Will subtitles show up in the PNG frames I extract?

Not if they are a real subtitle track. A VOB keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a PNG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became a VOB are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Can I pull one PNG out of each chapter of the VOB?

Not as a single button, but the VOB makes it straightforward: chapter marks are stored in the container as named timestamps, so read the chapter list off the file and paste those times into the timestamp field. You get one PNG per chapter, in order, which is the usual way of building thumbnails for a long recording. Sources with no chapter marks leave you picking scenes by eye instead. VOB preserves the whole DVD payload — multiple angles, multiple audio languages and subtitle tracks all survive inside it.
Does the PNG output support transparency?

The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
How big will the PNG files be?

Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
At what resolution do the extracted PNG images come out?

Same resolution as the source VOB: a 1080p VOB produces 1920x1080 PNG frames, a 4K VOB produces 3840x2160 PNG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of a VOB as PNG?

Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute VOB produces 1,800 PNG frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. For longer clips, prefer the "1 per second" preset (60 frames per minute) or pick specific timestamps. An hour of VOB at every-frame would produce ~100,000 PNG images.
Will the PNG frames preserve the VOB colour grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source VOB stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a PNG that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
How big is one extracted PNG frame on disk?

Depends on resolution and PNG codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p VOB is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
Does the extracted PNG keep camera EXIF metadata?

A VOB container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the PNG files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
How long does frame extraction from VOB to PNG take?

Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute VOB -> PNG bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the PNG encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the VOB demuxer.
