How do I extract just the audio track from WMV as FLAC?

Upload the WMV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the WMV container, then transcodes it into FLAC. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the FLAC codec itself introduces. WMV is Windows Media Video, Microsoft’s ASF-based format from the Windows XP era. FLAC is the Free Lossless Audio Codec, an open format from 2001 that compresses without discarding a single sample.
Does converting WMV to FLAC improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The WMV already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless FLAC preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
Can I tag the FLAC with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over WMV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. FLAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
Why will some of my WMV files not convert?

DRM. A subset of WMV files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not.
Which audio track gets extracted when my WMV has several?

One track, picked automatically: normally the main one, the track with the most channels. This page has no setting to choose a different track and does not list the tracks in the file. If you need commentary or a dub instead, remux the WMV with that track first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
What bitrate does the FLAC file use?

A lossy FLAC is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless FLAC (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample. FLAC uses linear prediction plus Rice coding to reach roughly 50-60% of the original size while decoding back to bit-identical PCM.
Will going from WMV to FLAC reduce my audio quality?

If the FLAC format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If FLAC is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The WMV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted FLAC keep the WMV sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz WMV audio becomes 48 kHz FLAC audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality FLAC) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract FLAC audio from a folder of WMV files?
