How do I extract individual frames from WMV as JPG images?

Upload the WMV file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the WMV video stream, encoded as a separate JPG file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. WMV is Windows Media Video, Microsoft’s ASF-based format from the Windows XP era. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Why do my extracted frames have horizontal lines through them?

Because the source is interlaced. WMV content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Can I get the JPG frames without the subtitles?

Only if the WMV never had them burned in, because WMV has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything a WMV shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every JPG the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
What quality setting should I use for the JPG output?

Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one used unless you change it — visually indistinguishable from the source at normal viewing distance, at roughly a fifth of the size of a lossless equivalent. Push to 95 for anything that will be edited or printed, and drop to 70 for thumbnails where size dominates. JPG is lossy: the image is transformed with a DCT, quantised, and entropy-coded, with a quality knob controlling how much is discarded.
At what resolution do the extracted JPG images come out?

Same resolution as the source WMV: a 1080p WMV produces 1920x1080 JPG frames, a 4K WMV produces 3840x2160 JPG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of a WMV as JPG?

Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute WMV produces 1,800 JPG frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. For longer clips, prefer the "1 per second" preset (60 frames per minute) or pick specific timestamps. An hour of WMV at every-frame would produce ~100,000 JPG images.
Will the JPG frames preserve the WMV colour grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source WMV stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a JPG that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
How big is one extracted JPG frame on disk?

Depends on resolution and JPG codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p WMV is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
Does the extracted JPG keep camera EXIF metadata?

A WMV container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the JPG files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
How long does frame extraction from WMV to JPG take?

Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute WMV -> JPG bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the JPG encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the WMV demuxer.
