How do I extract just the audio track from WMV as AUDIO?

Upload the WMV file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the WMV container, then transcodes it into AUDIO. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the AUDIO codec itself introduces. WMV is Windows Media Video, Microsoft’s ASF-based format from the Windows XP era. Is converting WMV to AUDIO a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the AUDIO encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the AUDIO from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. WMV carries Microsoft’s own VC-1 or WMV3 video with WMA audio — codecs almost nothing outside Windows decodes natively. Output defaults to MP3 at 192 kbps, which is transparent for most material and readable by every device.
Can I tag the AUDIO with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over WMV, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. AUDIO carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Choosing the target automatically is the fastest path when all you want is the sound out of a file, with no codec decisions to make.
Why will some of my WMV files not convert?

DRM. A subset of WMV files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. WMV is effectively a dead end: macOS, iOS, Android and every browser need third-party decoders, and some WMV files carry DRM that cannot be converted at all.
Which audio track gets extracted when my WMV has several?

One track, picked automatically: normally the main one, the track with the most channels. This page has no setting to choose a different track and does not list the tracks in the file. If you need commentary or a dub instead, remux the WMV with that track first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
What bitrate does the AUDIO file use?

A lossy AUDIO is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless AUDIO (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Will going from WMV to AUDIO reduce my audio quality?

If the AUDIO format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If AUDIO is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The WMV container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted AUDIO keep the WMV sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz WMV audio becomes 48 kHz AUDIO, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality AUDIO) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
