How do I convert M4A audio to FLAC without losing quality?

Upload the M4A file and the converter chooses the FLAC codec / bitrate combination that matches the source profile. Lossless FLAC (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample exactly; lossy FLAC (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all music content. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip. FLAC uses linear prediction plus Rice coding to reach roughly 50-60% of the original size while decoding back to bit-identical PCM.
Does converting M4A to FLAC improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The M4A already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless FLAC preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. M4A hides two very different things behind one extension — lossy AAC and lossless ALAC — and non-Apple hardware support is inconsistent.
Why will some of my M4A files not convert?

DRM. A subset of M4A files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not.
Will the FLAC play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. M4A is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; FLAC needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on M4A. FLAC is still several times larger than a good lossy file, and Apple’s ecosystem only added support recently and grudgingly.
What bitrate does the FLAC file end up at?

Default 192 kbps for lossy FLAC; pass-through for lossless FLAC. Override to 320 kbps if you want maximum lossy fidelity, 128 kbps for size-constrained podcast distribution, or 96 kbps for voice-only sources where the smaller file matters more than studio detail.
Will going from M4A to FLAC actually reduce my audio quality?

If M4A is lossy (MP3, AAC) and FLAC is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the FLAC is no better than the M4A — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy M4A codec. If M4A is lossless and FLAC is lossy, expect the FLAC encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Does the M4A to FLAC converter keep ID3 / metadata tags?

Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the M4A container and written into the equivalent fields on the FLAC container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. FLAC is the Free Lossless Audio Codec, an open format from 2001 that compresses without discarding a single sample.

For specific compatibility — e.g. downsampling 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz FLAC for CD burning, or upsampling 22 kHz voicemail to 44.1 kHz FLAC — the sample-rate dropdown applies high-quality SOX-style resampling.
Can I normalize loudness in the M4A to FLAC step?
