How do I extract individual frames from WebM as JPEG images?

Upload the WebM file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the WebM video stream, encoded as a separate JPEG file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
Not if they are a real subtitle track. A WebM keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a JPEG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became a WebM are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Quality 85 is the sensible default and the one used unless you change it — visually indistinguishable from the source at normal viewing distance, at roughly a fifth of the size of a lossless equivalent. Push to 95 for anything that will be edited or printed, and drop to 70 for thumbnails where size dominates. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
Same resolution as the source WebM: a 1080p WebM produces 1920x1080 JPEG frames, a 4K WebM produces 3840x2160 JPEG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.

Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source WebM stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a JPEG that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
Depends on resolution and JPEG codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p WebM is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
A WebM container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the JPEG files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute WebM -> JPEG bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the JPEG encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the WebM demuxer.
