How do I extract just the audio track from MP4 as MP3?

Upload the MP4 file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MP4 container, then transcodes it into MP3. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the MP3 codec itself introduces. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Is converting MP4 to MP3 a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. Almost every MP4 in the wild is H.264 video with AAC audio; the container also legally holds HEVC, AV1 and VP9. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Can I tag the MP3 with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MP4, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
What happens to multichannel audio when converting MP4 to MP3?

It is folded down to stereo, because MP3 has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MP4 has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your MP4 carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the MP3 file use?

Default MP3 bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless MP3 targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from MP4 to MP3 reduce my audio quality?

If the MP3 format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MP4 container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted MP3 keep the MP4 sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MP4 audio becomes 48 kHz MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality MP3) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract MP3 audio from a folder of MP4 files?

How long does extracting MP3 from a 1-hour MP4 take?

Audio demux + transcode runs much faster than video re-encoding — typically 5-15% of source duration. A 1-hour MP4 -> MP3 finishes in 3-9 minutes on the standard pipeline. If the MP3 codec matches the source codec already in the MP4 (common for AAC inside MKV / MP4), it is a pure remux and runs in seconds.
Will the MP3 file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the MP4 file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the MP3 container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged MP4 produces untagged MP3 — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
Is my MP4 private during audio extraction?
