How do I turn an MP4 clip into an animated GIF?

Upload the MP4 file, pick a start time and duration (default: first 5 seconds), and the converter samples frames at 15 fps, encodes them into an animated GIF container, and applies palette quantization tuned for the target (GIF uses an adaptive 256-colour palette; animated WebP supports full 24-bit colour with alpha). MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. GIF is CompuServe’s 1987 format, and the only reason it survived is that it animates.
Open it in a player, find the moment and note the timecode, because an MP4 does not normally carry chapter marks to navigate by. Paste that into the start-time field, add a duration, and the converter seeks to that point and decodes only the span you asked for. The seek is accurate to the frame, but it can only be as good as the number it is handed — check it against a preview before committing to a long clip. MP4 only supports one widely-honoured subtitle format (mov_text), and multi-track audio is unreliable outside desktop players.
Mainly for the orientation. An MP4 is an ISO base-media file, and that family records rotation as a flag in the container rather than by turning the pixels — which is why a clip shot upright on a phone can look right in one player and lie on its side in another. The animation is built from the decoded pixels, so that flag has to be honoured before the first frame is written; if the preview comes back sideways, rotate the source and convert it again. Everything else about a camera or editor recording is the easy case: one video track, one steady stream of frames. Almost every MP4 in the wild is H.264 video with AAC audio; the container also legally holds HEVC, AV1 and VP9.
Yes, once you have the file itself. An MP4 is what the web uses for inline video precisely because browsers play it with no plugin, so the clip playing in a tab is usually a plain MP4 that saves and uploads here like any other file. The exception is a streaming player that hands out short numbered segments rather than one file — those have to be reassembled before anything can be converted. Rights are the other thing worth checking: being able to download a video is not the same as being allowed to republish an animation made from it. MP4 is the safest possible delivery target — every phone, browser, console, editor and Smart TV built in the last decade plays it without extra software.
No — a GIF is an image file, so it starts the moment it is decoded and carries no play, pause or scrub control anywhere. That is a property of the format rather than of the page it sits on, and it is why the first frame matters more here than it would in a video: readers who have asked for reduced motion, and mail clients that render one frame only, see that frame and nothing else. Pick a start point whose opening frame reads sensibly on its own.
Animated GIF is sized for clips under 10 seconds. Longer than that and the output balloons fast — GIF is uncompressed-per-frame, so even modest clips run to many megabytes. For longer animations, target animated WebP or APNG, both of which compress similar to modern video codecs.
For animated GIF at 480p the typical result is 2-8 MB depending on motion complexity. For animated WebP at the same resolution / quality, expect 200 KB to 1 MB — animated WebP is 5-10x more efficient than GIF for the same visual quality. GIF is lossless but capped at a 256-colour palette per frame, using LZW compression and single-colour binary transparency.
By default we downsample to 15 fps for animated GIF (GIF works poorly above 25 fps in most viewers) and 24 fps for animated WebP / APNG (which handle higher rates fine). The frame-rate option overrides the default to preserve the source rate from your MP4 if your target viewer supports it.
No — animated GIF formats (GIF, WebP, APNG) do not store audio at all. If you need sound with your clip, target a video container (MP4, WebM, MKV) instead of GIF. Many social embeds (Twitter, Discord) actually convert MP4 uploads into GIF-style autoplay loops, giving you the best of both.
Yes — the loop-count option controls whether the GIF loops infinitely (default), plays N times, or plays once and stops. The loop count is stored in GIF container metadata and respected by every modern viewer, web browser, and embed surface.
Two common causes: frame-rate downsampling (we drop a 30 fps MP4 to 15 fps GIF by default — bump the frame-rate option to restore smoothness) and palette quantization (GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which posterizes gradients in a way the original MP4 did not). Yes — the resize option scales the input down before frame extraction, which dramatically reduces final GIF size. A 480p GIF generated from a 4K MP4 is 16x smaller on disk than a 4K GIF. Cropping is handled in a separate /trim/ or /crop/ step run before the conversion.
