MP4 to BMP Conversion FAQ
How do I extract individual frames from MP4 as BMP images?
+
Upload the MP4 and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one BMP from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a BMP image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Will subtitles show up in the BMP frames I extract?
+
Not if they are a real subtitle track. An MP4 keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a BMP has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became an MP4 are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
How big will the BMP files be?
+
Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
At what resolution do the extracted BMP images come out?
+
Same resolution as the source MP4: a 1080p MP4 produces 1920x1080 BMP frames, a 4K MP4 produces 3840x2160 BMP frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of an MP4 as BMP?
+
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 BMP images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the BMP frames preserve the MP4 colour grading?
+
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the MP4 as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR MP4 can look flat or washed out as a BMP. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
How long does frame extraction from MP4 to BMP take?
+
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Is my MP4 private during frame extraction?
+
Yes. Uploaded MP4 files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted BMP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted BMP frames blurry?
+
Almost always motion blur baked into the source MP4 (the camera or subject was moving while that frame was captured). Try picking timestamps from static scenes, or extract several adjacent frames and pick the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that is not in the original MP4.
