How do I extract just the audio track from MP4 as FLAC?

Upload the MP4 file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MP4 container, then transcodes it into FLAC. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the FLAC codec itself introduces. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. FLAC is the Free Lossless Audio Codec, an open format from 2001 that compresses without discarding a single sample.
Does converting MP4 to FLAC improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The MP4 already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless FLAC preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because FLAC will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. FLAC gives you WAV fidelity at half the size, with proper metadata tags and embedded artwork, which is why it dominates lossless music libraries. MP4 only supports one widely-honoured subtitle format (mov_text), and multi-track audio is unreliable outside desktop players.
Can I tag the FLAC with artist and album information?

Yes, and it is a genuine gain over MP4, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. FLAC carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
Will the FLAC play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. MP4 is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; FLAC needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on MP4. FLAC is still several times larger than a good lossy file, and Apple’s ecosystem only added support recently and grudgingly.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MP4 has several?

One track, picked automatically: normally the main one, the track with the most channels. This page has no setting to choose a different track and does not list the tracks in the file. If you need commentary or a dub instead, remux the MP4 with that track first (VLC or ffmpeg can do this) and convert it again.
What bitrate does the FLAC file use?

A lossy FLAC is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless FLAC (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample. FLAC uses linear prediction plus Rice coding to reach roughly 50-60% of the original size while decoding back to bit-identical PCM.
Will going from MP4 to FLAC reduce my audio quality?

If the FLAC format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If FLAC is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MP4 container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted FLAC keep the MP4 sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MP4 audio becomes 48 kHz FLAC audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality FLAC) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract FLAC audio from a folder of MP4 files?

How long does extracting FLAC from a 1-hour MP4 take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Is my MP4 private during audio extraction?
