WAV to AC3 Conversion FAQ

How do I convert WAV audio to AC3 without losing quality?
+
Upload the WAV file and the converter chooses the AC3 codec / bitrate combination that matches the source profile. Lossless AC3 (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample exactly; lossy AC3 (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all music content. WAV normally stores raw uncompressed PCM — every sample kept exactly, at whatever bit depth and sample rate was captured. AC-3 is lossy multichannel audio, normally 5.1 at 384 or 448 kbps, with metadata for dialogue normalisation and downmixing.
Some, and it is permanent — this is the one direction where information is genuinely thrown away. WAV holds every sample exactly; AC3 discards what a psychoacoustic model predicts you will not hear. At 192 kbps and above that prediction is good enough to be transparent on most material and most equipment. Keep the WAV as your master, because you cannot get back to it from the AC3.
Free accounts cap at 100 MB per file, and WAV runs to roughly 10 MB per minute in stereo because nothing about it is compressed — every sample is stored at full width. Ten minutes is already at the limit. Premium lifts the cap considerably, and the format has its own 4 GB ceiling above that, which is why long sessions arrive split into numbered parts; upload them together and they are treated as one job. WAV is enormous — roughly 10 MB per stereo minute at CD quality — and the classic format has a 4 GB ceiling and no room for proper tags.
Default 192 kbps for lossy AC3; pass-through for lossless AC3. Override to 320 kbps if you want maximum lossy fidelity, 128 kbps for size-constrained podcast distribution, or 96 kbps for voice-only sources where the smaller file matters more than studio detail.
If WAV is lossy (MP3, AAC) and AC3 is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the AC3 is no better than the WAV — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy WAV codec. If WAV is lossless and AC3 is lossy, expect the AC3 encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the WAV container and written into the equivalent fields on the AC3 container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. AC-3 is Dolby Digital, the surround format standardised for laserdisc, DVD, ATSC broadcast and cinema in the early 1990s.
Yes — drop a folder of WAV files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes. Folder structure is preserved in the output ZIP.
By default yes (a 48 kHz WAV produces 48 kHz AC3, a 44.1 kHz WAV produces 44.1 kHz AC3). For specific compatibility — e.g. downsampling 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz AC3 for CD burning, or upsampling 22 kHz voicemail to 44.1 kHz AC3 — the sample-rate dropdown applies high-quality SOX-style resampling.
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the AC3 output, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard) or a custom value. Useful when batch-converting tracks with varying mastering levels into a single AC3 playlist.
MP3 plays universally on every device made in the last 20 years. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, Sonos, and modern car stereos. FLAC plays on Sonos and recent Android, less well on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but the file is huge. The device-target dropdown picks a safe AC3 codec for the platform you specify. AC-3 is the surround track every AV receiver, DVD player and TV decodes natively, which is why it is still the broadcast baseline. AC-3 is inefficient by modern standards and is not accepted by browsers, phones or most web players without a downmix to stereo.
Yes — uploaded WAV files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never play, store, or share the audio content. The pipeline runs on hardware we control end-to-end; no third-party services receive your file.
Same-codec re-mux (e.g. AAC inside M4A -> AAC inside MP4): 10-30 seconds. Codec change (e.g. FLAC -> MP3 or WAV -> AAC): typically 10-20% of source duration, so a 1-hour WAV -> AC3 finishes in 6-12 minutes on the standard pipeline.

WAV

WAV files store audio in uncompressed format, presenting CD-standard sound perfect for production-ready audio work.

AC3

AC-3 (Dolby Digital) is the surround-sound track used on DVDs and broadcast television, carrying up to six channels.
