MPG to BMP Conversion FAQ
How do I extract individual frames from MPG as BMP images?
+
Upload the MPG and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one BMP from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a BMP image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. MPG is the same MPEG program stream as .mpeg — the three-letter extension is a DOS-era truncation, not a different format. BMP is the Windows Bitmap, the raw raster format built into Windows since 1985.
Can I get the BMP frames without the subtitles?
+
Only if the MPG never had them burned in, because MPG has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an MPG shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every BMP the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. MPG inherits every MPEG-2 limitation — heavy bitrate, interlacing, no soft subtitles — plus the confusion of two extensions for one format.
How big will the BMP files be?
+
Larger than you might expect, because BMP keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. BMP usually stores completely uncompressed pixel rows with a small header, which is why it is so simple to parse.
At what resolution do the extracted BMP images come out?
+
Same resolution as the source MPG: a 1080p MPG produces 1920x1080 BMP frames, a 4K MPG produces 3840x2160 BMP frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of an MPG as BMP?
+
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 BMP images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
Will the BMP frames preserve the MPG colour grading?
+
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the MPG as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR MPG can look flat or washed out as a BMP. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
How long does frame extraction from MPG to BMP take?
+
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Is my MPG private during frame extraction?
+
Yes. Uploaded MPG files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted BMP are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Why are my extracted BMP frames blurry?
+
Almost always motion blur baked into the source MPG (the camera or subject was moving while that frame was captured). Try picking timestamps from static scenes, or extract several adjacent frames and pick the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that is not in the original MPG.
