How do I extract individual frames from MPEG as Image images?

Upload the MPEG file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the MPEG video stream, encoded as a separate Image file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. MPEG here means an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream, the format standardised for Video CD and then for DVD and broadcast television. Image here is a generic target: the converter picks a sensible raster format for the source rather than forcing one on you.
Because the source is interlaced. MPEG content from the broadcast and DVD era stores two half-height fields per frame, captured a fiftieth of a second apart, and a still pulled straight out shows both woven together as combing on anything that moved. Enable deinterlacing before extraction and each still is built from a single reconstructed progressive frame.
Only if the MPEG never had them burned in, because MPEG has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything an MPEG shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every Image the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. MPEG-2 needs roughly four to six times the bitrate of H.264 for the same picture, and its content is frequently interlaced, which looks combed on modern displays.
The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the Image later without changing format again. Choosing the target automatically means you get a file that opens anywhere without having to reason about codecs first.
Larger than you might expect, because Image keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. Photographic sources default to JPG, sources with transparency or hard edges default to PNG, and multi-page sources produce one image per page.
Same resolution as the source MPEG: a 1080p MPEG produces 1920x1080 Image frames, a 4K MPEG produces 3840x2160 Image frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute MPEG produces 1,800 Image frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source MPEG stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to an Image that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
Depends on resolution and Image codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p MPEG is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
An MPEG container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the Image files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute MPEG -> Image bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the Image encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the MPEG demuxer.
