What bitrate does the WMA file end up at?

A lossy WMA is encoded at 192 kbps by default. The Audio Quality setting also offers 320 kbps for the best quality and 128 kbps for a smaller file. A lossless WMA (WAV, FLAC) ignores the bitrate and keeps every sample.
Is converting MP3 to WMA a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the WMA encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the WMA from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered.
Will the WMA play in my car or on older hardware?

Often not. MP3 is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; WMA needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on MP3. WMA is unsupported almost everywhere outside Windows, and older WMA files may carry DRM that blocks conversion entirely.
Will going from MP3 to WMA actually reduce my audio quality?

If MP3 is lossy (MP3, AAC) and WMA is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the WMA is no better than the MP3 — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy MP3 codec. If MP3 is lossless and WMA is lossy, expect the WMA encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of MP3 files into WMA?

Can I normalize loudness in the MP3 to WMA step?

Not in this step. The converter has no loudness setting and leaves the level as it is. To even out the volume, run the finished WMA through a Normalize tool on this site.
Will the WMA play on my car stereo / iPod / Sonos / Bluetooth speaker?

MP3 plays almost everywhere. AAC plays on Apple devices, most Android phones and Sonos. FLAC plays on Sonos and Android but not on older iPods, and WAV plays on nearly everything but makes large files. There are no device presets on this page, so choose the target format your player supports. WMA compressed better than contemporary MP3 encoders and remains readable by Windows Media Player and old PlaysForSure devices.
Is my MP3 file private during conversion?

How long does converting a 1-hour MP3 to WMA take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
