M4A to AMR Conversion FAQ
How do I convert M4A audio to AMR without losing quality?
+
Upload the M4A file and the converter chooses the AMR codec / bitrate combination that matches the source profile. Lossless AMR (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample exactly; lossy AMR (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all music content. An M4A holds AAC in most cases, or Apple Lossless (ALAC) when it came from a lossless rip. AMR is a narrowband speech codec running between 4.75 and 12.2 kbps, modelling the human vocal tract rather than the full audio spectrum.
Is converting M4A to AMR a second round of lossy compression?
+
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the AMR encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the AMR from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
Will my track titles and album art survive the M4A to AMR conversion?
+
Not intact. M4A carries a proper metadata block, but AMR has no standard place for artist, album, track number or cover art, so tags are dropped rather than mangled. Keep the M4A as the tagged copy, or re-tag afterwards with a tool like Mp3tag or MusicBrainz Picard. AMR destroys music: its 8 kHz bandwidth removes everything above telephone frequencies, and no amount of re-encoding brings it back.
What happens to multichannel audio when converting M4A to AMR?
+
It is folded down to stereo, because AMR has no practical multichannel mode. The downmix uses the standard coefficients so centre-channel dialogue stays clear and the surrounds are mixed in at reduced level. Anything that depended on discrete channel placement is gone once that happens.
Why will some of my M4A files not convert?
+
DRM. A subset of M4A files are encrypted by the store or the software that issued them, and encrypted audio cannot be decoded by any converter. Anything you ripped yourself, recorded, or bought without protection converts normally; a licensed purchase will not. M4A hides two very different things behind one extension — lossy AAC and lossless ALAC — and non-Apple hardware support is inconsistent.
Why does music sound so poor in this conversion?
+
Because one side of it is a speech codec rather than a music codec. It models the human vocal tract and discards everything outside telephone bandwidth, which is fine for a voice memo and destructive for anything with instruments in it. Converting away from it cannot restore the missing frequencies — they were never encoded in the first place.
What bitrate does the AMR file end up at?
+
Default 192 kbps for lossy AMR; pass-through for lossless AMR. Override to 320 kbps if you want maximum lossy fidelity, 128 kbps for size-constrained podcast distribution, or 96 kbps for voice-only sources where the smaller file matters more than studio detail.
Will going from M4A to AMR actually reduce my audio quality?
+
If M4A is lossy (MP3, AAC) and AMR is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the AMR is no better than the M4A — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy M4A codec. If M4A is lossless and AMR is lossy, expect the AMR encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Does the M4A to AMR converter keep ID3 / metadata tags?
+
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the M4A container and written into the equivalent fields on the AMR container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. AMR is Adaptive Multi-Rate, the speech codec 3GPP standardised for GSM voice calls and mobile voice recorders.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of M4A files into AMR?
+
Yes — drop a folder of M4A files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes. Folder structure is preserved in the output ZIP.
Will the AMR keep the same sample rate as the M4A?
+
By default yes (a 48 kHz M4A produces 48 kHz AMR, a 44.1 kHz M4A produces 44.1 kHz AMR). For specific compatibility — e.g. downsampling 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz AMR for CD burning, or upsampling 22 kHz voicemail to 44.1 kHz AMR — the sample-rate dropdown applies high-quality SOX-style resampling.
Can I normalize loudness in the M4A to AMR step?
+
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the AMR output, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard) or a custom value. Useful when batch-converting tracks with varying mastering levels into a single AMR playlist.
