Does JPG to PSD conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when PSD is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of PSD. PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s native document, and it is a working file rather than a delivery format. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.

Can I get transparency once the image is PSD?

The PSD format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PSD provides has something to store. PSD keeps every editing decision reversible, which is why it is the master format for design work that will be revised.

Does converting JPG to PSD restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPG are ordinary pixel data now, and PSD preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.

What happens to EXIF metadata when converting JPG to PSD?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PSD. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.

Can I batch-convert hundreds of JPG files to PSD at once?
