Does ICO to JPEG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when JPEG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of JPEG. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
How much quality will I lose going from ICO to JPEG?

At quality 80-85 the difference is invisible at normal viewing distance and the file typically drops by 60-80%. The catch is that it is one-way: re-saving the JPEG repeatedly compounds the artefacts each time. Keep the ICO as the master and regenerate the JPEG from it whenever you need a new size. ICO lets one file serve a taskbar, a file listing, a desktop shortcut and a browser tab without any of them looking resampled. The bitstream is identical to a .jpg: DCT-based lossy compression, usually with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, wrapped in a JFIF or Exif header.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting ICO to JPEG?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the JPEG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.

Why is my converted JPEG file bigger or smaller than expected?

An ICO file with strong compression (heavily lossy JPG) often grows when re-encoded into a lossless JPEG (PNG, TIFF), and a high-bitrate lossless ICO often shrinks dramatically when going to JPG/WebP. The ratio depends on the image content (photos compress differently from line-art or screenshots). ICO is not a general image format: it is square, small, and no photo editor treats it as a first-class working file. JPEG shares every JPG limitation — no alpha, generational loss on re-save — with the added nuisance of software that treats the two extensions differently.
