DivX to JPEG Conversion FAQ

How do I extract individual frames from DivX as JPEG images?
+
Upload the DivX and open the options. Frame Extraction has two modes: Single Frame saves one JPEG from the second you enter (for example 1, 5 or 10.5), and All Frames saves every frame of the video as a JPEG image. There is no every-Nth-frame or one-per-second mode. DivX names a codec rather than a container — an MPEG-4 Part 2 implementation that made ripping a DVD to a single CD possible around 1999. JPEG is the same standard as JPG and JFIF — the four-letter extension is the original, and the three-letter one exists only because of the DOS 8.3 filename limit.
Only if the DivX never had them burned in, because DivX has no selectable subtitle stream to switch off. Anything a DivX shows on screen is in the picture itself, so it is in every JPEG the extraction produces and no setting removes it afterwards. Where a separate subtitle file exists alongside the video, extract from a source that kept the two apart and the frames come out clean. DivX needs roughly twice the bitrate of H.264 for the same quality and has no path to HDR, 10-bit colour or resolutions beyond 1080p.
Same resolution as the source DivX: a 1080p DivX produces 1920x1080 JPEG frames, a 4K DivX produces 3840x2160 JPEG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Yes, with All Frames in the Frame Extraction option, but watch the count: one minute of 30 fps video gives 1,800 JPEG images. For a single still, choose Single Frame and enter the second you want instead.
HDR footage is not tone-mapped: each frame is converted from the DivX as it is decoded, so a frame from an HDR DivX can look flat or washed out as a JPEG. Standard (SDR) video keeps its colours.
It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame.
Yes. Uploaded DivX files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted JPEG are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Almost always motion blur baked into the source DivX (the camera or subject was moving while that frame was captured). Try picking timestamps from static scenes, or extract several adjacent frames and pick the sharpest. The pipeline does not synthesize detail that is not in the original DivX.
No. The converter has no scene detection and no one-per-second mode: it saves either a single frame at the second you enter or every frame. For one image per scene, extract single frames at the times where the scenes change.

DivX

DivX was the codec that made feature-length video fit on a CD, and it still turns up in older AVI files.

JPEG

JPEG uses lossy compression optimized for photographs, balancing standard and file size.
