How do I extract just the audio track from AVI as WAV?

Upload the AVI file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the AVI container, then transcodes it into WAV. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the WAV codec itself introduces. AVI is Microsoft’s Audio Video Interleave, introduced in 1992 on top of the RIFF chunk format — one of the oldest containers still in circulation. WAV is Microsoft and IBM’s RIFF-based audio container from 1991, and it is what almost every audio interface and DAW writes on record.
Does converting AVI to WAV improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The AVI already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless WAV preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because WAV will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. WAV is the correct format for editing, mastering and archiving, because it can be re-encoded any number of times without accumulating artefacts. AVI has no native support for modern codecs, variable frame rate, soft subtitles or files over 4 GB without hacks, and its per-chunk overhead bloats the file.
Will a very large AVI file upload successfully?

Free accounts cap at 100 MB per file, and AVI sources run large because the format carries substantial per-chunk overhead on top of the video data. Premium lifts the cap considerably. If the file is split into numbered parts because of the format ceiling, upload them together and they are treated as one job.
Which audio track gets extracted when my AVI has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your AVI carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the WAV file use?

Default WAV bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless WAV targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample. WAV normally stores raw uncompressed PCM — every sample kept exactly, at whatever bit depth and sample rate was captured.
Will going from AVI to WAV reduce my audio quality?

If the WAV format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If WAV is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The AVI container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted WAV keep the AVI sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz AVI audio becomes 48 kHz WAV audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality WAV) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract WAV audio from a folder of AVI files?

How long does extracting WAV from a 1-hour AVI take?

Audio demux + transcode runs much faster than video re-encoding — typically 5-15% of source duration. A 1-hour AVI -> WAV finishes in 3-9 minutes on the standard pipeline. If the WAV codec matches the source codec already in the AVI (common for AAC inside MKV / MP4), it is a pure remux and runs in seconds.
Will the WAV file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the AVI file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the WAV container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged AVI produces untagged WAV — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
Is my AVI private during audio extraction?

Why does my WAV have silent gaps or wrong audio?

Almost always a stream-index mismatch — your AVI had a multi-track audio layout and we extracted the wrong stream (e.g. the silent descriptive audio track instead of the main mix). Re-run with the advanced "audio stream" option set to the right index, or pick "all streams" to extract every track as a separate WAV file.
