AMR to WMA Conversion FAQ

How do I convert AMR audio to WMA without losing quality?
+
Upload the AMR file and the converter chooses the WMA codec / bitrate combination that matches the source profile. Lossless WMA (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample exactly; lossy WMA (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all music content. AMR is a narrowband speech codec running between 4.75 and 12.2 kbps, modelling the human vocal tract rather than the full audio spectrum. WMA is lossy by default, in an ASF container, with lossless and voice-optimised variants that are rarely encountered.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the WMA encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the WMA from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over AMR, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. WMA carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. WMA compressed better than contemporary MP3 encoders and remains readable by Windows Media Player and old PlaysForSure devices.
Often not. AMR is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; WMA needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on AMR. WMA is unsupported almost everywhere outside Windows, and older WMA files may carry DRM that blocks conversion entirely.
Because one side of it is a speech codec rather than a music codec. It models the human vocal tract and discards everything outside telephone bandwidth, which is fine for a voice memo and destructive for anything with instruments in it. Converting away from it cannot restore the missing frequencies — they were never encoded in the first place. AMR destroys music: its 8 kHz bandwidth removes everything above telephone frequencies, and no amount of re-encoding brings it back.
Default 192 kbps for lossy WMA; pass-through for lossless WMA. Override to 320 kbps if you want maximum lossy fidelity, 128 kbps for size-constrained podcast distribution, or 96 kbps for voice-only sources where the smaller file matters more than studio detail.
If AMR is lossy (MP3, AAC) and WMA is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the WMA is no better than the AMR — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy AMR codec. If AMR is lossless and WMA is lossy, expect the WMA encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the AMR container and written into the equivalent fields on the WMA container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. WMA is Windows Media Audio, Microsoft’s answer to MP3, launched in 1999 and bundled with every Windows install of that era.
Yes — drop a folder of AMR files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes. Folder structure is preserved in the output ZIP.
By default yes (a 48 kHz AMR produces 48 kHz WMA, a 44.1 kHz AMR produces 44.1 kHz WMA). For specific compatibility — e.g. downsampling 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz WMA for CD burning, or upsampling 22 kHz voicemail to 44.1 kHz WMA — the sample-rate dropdown applies high-quality SOX-style resampling.
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the WMA output, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard) or a custom value. Useful when batch-converting tracks with varying mastering levels into a single WMA playlist.
MP3 plays universally on every device made in the last 20 years. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, Sonos, and modern car stereos. FLAC plays on Sonos and recent Android, less well on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but the file is huge. The device-target dropdown picks a safe WMA codec for the platform you specify.

AMR

AMR is a speech codec tuned for voice recordings and phone calls, which is why music sounds poor in it.

WMA

WMA is Microsoft audio from the Windows Media era, still readable everywhere but long since displaced by AAC and MP3.
