AMR to MP3 Conversion FAQ

How do I convert AMR audio to MP3 without losing quality?
+
Upload the AMR file and the converter chooses the MP3 codec / bitrate combination that matches the source profile. Lossless MP3 (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample exactly; lossy MP3 (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all music content. AMR is a narrowband speech codec running between 4.75 and 12.2 kbps, modelling the human vocal tract rather than the full audio spectrum. MP3 is lossy: a psychoacoustic model discards frequencies the ear is unlikely to notice, typically at 128 to 320 kbps.
Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the MP3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the MP3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely.
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over AMR, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. MP3 carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass. Nothing beats MP3 for compatibility — car stereos, gym equipment, DAPs and twenty-year-old hardware all read it without question.
Because one side of it is a speech codec rather than a music codec. It models the human vocal tract and discards everything outside telephone bandwidth, which is fine for a voice memo and destructive for anything with instruments in it. Converting away from it cannot restore the missing frequencies — they were never encoded in the first place. AMR destroys music: its 8 kHz bandwidth removes everything above telephone frequencies, and no amount of re-encoding brings it back.
Default 192 kbps for lossy MP3; pass-through for lossless MP3. Override to 320 kbps if you want maximum lossy fidelity, 128 kbps for size-constrained podcast distribution, or 96 kbps for voice-only sources where the smaller file matters more than studio detail.
If AMR is lossy (MP3, AAC) and MP3 is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the MP3 is no better than the AMR — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy AMR codec. If AMR is lossless and MP3 is lossy, expect the MP3 encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the AMR container and written into the equivalent fields on the MP3 container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. MP3 is MPEG-1 Audio Layer III, finalised in 1993, and still the most universally decodable audio format that exists.
Yes — drop a folder of AMR files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes. Folder structure is preserved in the output ZIP.
By default yes (a 48 kHz AMR produces 48 kHz MP3, a 44.1 kHz AMR produces 44.1 kHz MP3). For specific compatibility — e.g. downsampling 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz MP3 for CD burning, or upsampling 22 kHz voicemail to 44.1 kHz MP3 — the sample-rate dropdown applies high-quality SOX-style resampling.
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the MP3 output, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard) or a custom value. Useful when batch-converting tracks with varying mastering levels into a single MP3 playlist.
MP3 plays universally on every device made in the last 20 years. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, Sonos, and modern car stereos. FLAC plays on Sonos and recent Android, less well on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but the file is huge. The device-target dropdown picks a safe MP3 codec for the platform you specify. MP3 is technically outclassed by AAC and Opus at every bitrate, cannot store more than two channels usefully, and always adds a small encoder delay.
Yes — uploaded AMR files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never play, store, or share the audio content. The pipeline runs on hardware we control end-to-end; no third-party services receive your file.

AMR

AMR is a speech codec tuned for voice recordings and phone calls, which is why music sounds poor in it.

MP3

MP3 files use lossy compression to reduce file size while upholding acceptable audio standard for most listeners.
