How do I extract individual frames from WebM as PNG images?

Upload the WebM file and the converter exposes a frame-extraction picker: every Nth frame, frames at specific timestamps, or one frame per second. Each chosen frame is decoded from the WebM video stream, encoded as a separate PNG file, and bundled as a ZIP for download. WebM is a strict subset of Matroska that Google published in 2010 specifically to give HTML5 video a royalty-free container. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format.
Will subtitles show up in the PNG frames I extract?

Not if they are a real subtitle track. A WebM keeps subtitles as their own stream and the player draws them over the picture at playback time, so the decoded frame the converter writes out as a PNG has clean pixels underneath. Subtitles that were burned into the video before it ever became a WebM are a different matter — by then they are part of the image and every extracted frame keeps them.
Does the PNG output support transparency?

The format does, but the source has no alpha to give it — video frames and rendered pages are fully opaque by nature, so every pixel arrives solid. The alpha channel is still useful afterwards: it means you can cut a subject out of the PNG later without changing format again. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
How big will the PNG files be?

Larger than you might expect, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly rather than approximating. A 1080p still lands around 2-5 MB and a 4K still around 6-15 MB, so a long extraction run adds up quickly. That is the right trade when the images feed further processing, and the wrong one when they are going straight onto a web page. PNG uses DEFLATE compression over filtered scanlines, so every pixel survives exactly, plus a full 8-bit alpha channel.
At what resolution do the extracted PNG images come out?

Same resolution as the source WebM: a 1080p WebM produces 1920x1080 PNG frames, a 4K WebM produces 3840x2160 PNG frames. The converter does not upscale or downsample — pixel dimensions are pulled straight from the decoded frame. Use /resize-image/ after extraction if you need smaller thumbnails.
Can I extract every frame of a WebM as PNG?

Yes, but mind the file count — a 30 fps 1-minute WebM produces 1,800 PNG frames. We pack them into a single ZIP archive automatically. For longer clips, prefer the "1 per second" preset (60 frames per minute) or pick specific timestamps. An hour of WebM at every-frame would produce ~100,000 PNG images.
Will the PNG frames preserve the WebM colour grading?

Yes — colour is decoded with the same matrix the source WebM stream advertises (BT.709 for HD, BT.2020 for 4K HDR). HDR sources are tone-mapped to SDR when extracting to a PNG that cannot store HDR pixel ranges natively (JPG, PNG-8). Target high-bit PNG-16 or TIFF if you need to keep extended dynamic range.
How big is one extracted PNG frame on disk?

Depends on resolution and PNG codec choice: a 1080p PNG frame is 2-5 MB lossless, a 1080p JPG at quality 85 is 200-500 KB. Multiply by frame count to size the ZIP — at the extreme, every-frame PNG extraction of a 10-minute 1080p WebM is roughly 50 GB and gets split across multiple ZIPs.
Does the extracted PNG keep camera EXIF metadata?

A WebM container does not carry per-frame EXIF the way a still camera does, so the PNG files come out with empty EXIF blocks. The converter does embed a `creation_time` field pointing at the source frame timestamp, so you can re-sort the bundle in chronological order or correlate with subtitle / chapter markers.
How long does frame extraction from WebM to PNG take?

Frame decoding is fast — typically 20-30% of source duration. A 5-minute WebM -> PNG bundle finishes in about 1 minute regardless of how many frames you pick, because the bottleneck is the PNG encoder writing many small files in parallel, not the WebM demuxer.
Can I extract frames at exact timestamps inside the WebM video?
