Does JPG to PNG conversion preserve transparency?

Transparency survives when PNG is PNG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, or SVG. Converting to JPG flattens the alpha channel against a white background — if you need transparency, pick a transparency-aware target instead of PNG. PNG was designed in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF, and became the web’s default lossless image format. JPG is the JPEG standard from 1992, served under the .jpg, .jpeg and .jfif extensions alike, and after three decades it is still the format most cameras and most websites use for photographs.
Can I get transparency once the image is PNG?

The PNG format supports it, but the conversion cannot invent it. A JPG has no alpha channel, so every pixel including the background arrives fully opaque. Run /image-removebackground/ afterwards to cut the subject out — then the alpha channel PNG provides has something to store. PNG is the right choice for screenshots, logos, line art and anything with hard edges or transparency — no ringing, no colour banding.
Does converting JPG to PNG restore the quality that was lost?

No. The compression artefacts already baked into the JPG are ordinary pixel data now, and PNG preserves them perfectly rather than removing them. The file usually gets larger, sometimes several times larger. It is still worth doing before editing, because further edits will not stack a second generation of loss on top. JPG has no transparency, degrades further every time it is re-saved, and produces visible blocking on flat colour and sharp text.
Will my CMYK colour survive the conversion to PNG?

It is converted to sRGB, because PNG has no CMYK mode. For screen use that is exactly what you want. For commercial print it is not — the gamut shift changes how saturated colours reproduce on press, so send the printer the original JPG rather than the PNG. PNG is a poor photograph format: a photo saved as PNG is routinely five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG or WebP.
What happens to EXIF metadata when converting JPG to PNG?

In most conversions, camera EXIF fields such as the camera model and GPS position are not carried into the PNG. There is no setting on this page to keep or remove metadata, so check the result with a metadata viewer if it matters.
Can I batch-convert hundreds of JPG files to PNG at once?

Are my JPG files private during conversion?
