How do I extract just the audio track from MP4 as AC3?

Upload the MP4 file and the converter demuxes the audio stream from the MP4 container, then transcodes it into AC3. Video frames are discarded — no second video pass, no quality loss beyond what the AC3 codec itself introduces. MP4 is ISO/IEC 14496-14, standardised in 2001 and derived from the same QuickTime box layout MOV uses. AC-3 is Dolby Digital, the surround format standardised for laserdisc, DVD, ATSC broadcast and cinema in the early 1990s.
Is converting MP4 to AC3 a second round of lossy compression?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Both formats are lossy, so the AC3 encoder is working from audio that has already been through one psychoacoustic pass, and its own decisions compound the first set. At 192 kbps or above the result is still transparent for most listening. If you have a lossless master anywhere, encoding the AC3 from that instead avoids the double pass entirely. Almost every MP4 in the wild is H.264 video with AAC audio; the container also legally holds HEVC, AV1 and VP9. AC-3 is lossy multichannel audio, normally 5.1 at 384 or 448 kbps, with metadata for dialogue normalisation and downmixing.
Which audio track gets extracted when my MP4 has several?

By default stream 0 (the first audio track, usually the main mix). If your MP4 carries commentary, dubs, or descriptive audio on additional tracks, the advanced "audio stream" picker lets you pick 1, 2, 3... explicitly. The track list is shown in the upload preview so you do not pick blind.
What bitrate does the AC3 file use?

Default AC3 bitrate is 192 kbps (transparent for music to most ears). Override to 320 kbps for audiophile output, or 96-128 kbps for voice / podcast where the smaller file is the priority. Lossless AC3 targets (WAV, FLAC) ignore the bitrate setting and keep every sample.
Will going from MP4 to AC3 reduce my audio quality?

If the AC3 format is lossless (WAV, FLAC, ALAC), every original sample is preserved. If AC3 is lossy (MP3, AAC, OGG, Opus), the codec recompresses — at 192 kbps the difference is inaudible for most content; at 96 kbps you may hear cymbals or sibilants softening. The MP4 container has no influence on this — only the codec settings matter.
Does the extracted AC3 keep the MP4 sample rate?

By default yes — 48 kHz MP4 audio becomes 48 kHz AC3 audio, 44.1 kHz becomes 44.1 kHz. If you need to downsample for compatibility (e.g. 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz CD-quality AC3) the sample-rate dropdown does this with high-quality resampling.
Can I batch-extract AC3 audio from a folder of MP4 files?

How long does extracting AC3 from a 1-hour MP4 take?

Audio demux + transcode runs much faster than video re-encoding — typically 5-15% of source duration. A 1-hour MP4 -> AC3 finishes in 3-9 minutes on the standard pipeline. If the AC3 codec matches the source codec already in the MP4 (common for AAC inside MKV / MP4), it is a pure remux and runs in seconds.
Will the AC3 file carry title / artist / album tags?

If the MP4 file stores stream metadata (artist, title, album), we copy those fields into the AC3 container where the format supports tags. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC / M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV) are all written. Untagged MP4 produces untagged AC3 — use Mp3tag or Picard post-export to enrich.
Is my MP4 private during audio extraction?

Yes — same privacy model as every conversion. Source MP4 and output AC3 are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never play, store, or share content. See /privacy/.
Why does my AC3 have silent gaps or wrong audio?

Almost always a stream-index mismatch — your MP4 had a multi-track audio layout and we extracted the wrong stream (e.g. the silent descriptive audio track instead of the main mix). Re-run with the advanced "audio stream" option set to the right index, or pick "all streams" to extract every track as a separate AC3 file.
Can the AC3 extraction be stereo, mono, or 5.1?

Channel layout follows the MP4 by default: a 5.1 MP4 audio stream produces a 5.1 AC3 where the codec supports it (AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus). The channel-downmix option forces stereo or mono — useful for podcast workflow or compatibility with mono-only Bluetooth speakers.
