Why is the WAV file louder or quieter than the AIFF source?

If you do hear a level shift, your audio player or media library may be applying ReplayGain or per-track normalization on playback — turn that off and the WAV sounds bit-identical to the AIFF (for lossless) or perceptually identical (for transparent lossy).
Can I convert AIFF downloads from Bandcamp / SoundCloud into WAV?
