AC3 to AIFF Conversion FAQ

How do I convert AC3 audio to AIFF without losing quality?
+
Upload the AC3 file and the converter chooses the AIFF codec / bitrate combination that matches the source profile. Lossless AIFF (WAV / FLAC / ALAC) preserves every sample exactly; lossy AIFF (MP3 / AAC / OGG / Opus) defaults to 192 kbps which is transparent for almost all music content. AC-3 is lossy multichannel audio, normally 5.1 at 384 or 448 kbps, with metadata for dialogue normalisation and downmixing. AIFF stores uncompressed big-endian PCM — the Apple-side equivalent of WAV, with the same bit-for-bit fidelity.
No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The AC3 already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless AIFF preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because AIFF will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. AIFF is the studio interchange format on macOS, handles metadata better than plain WAV, and imports into Logic and Pro Tools instantly. AC-3 is inefficient by modern standards and is not accepted by browsers, phones or most web players without a downmix to stereo.
Yes, and it is a genuine gain over AC3, which has nowhere dependable to store any of it. AIFF carries title, artist, album, year, track number and embedded cover art in the container itself, so a music library files it correctly without a manual pass.
Often not. AC3 is decoded by essentially everything, including car head units and elderly players; AIFF needs software that knows the codec, which standalone hardware frequently does not have. If the destination is a car stereo or a portable player, that is a strong argument for staying on AC3. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.
Default 192 kbps for lossy AIFF; pass-through for lossless AIFF. Override to 320 kbps if you want maximum lossy fidelity, 128 kbps for size-constrained podcast distribution, or 96 kbps for voice-only sources where the smaller file matters more than studio detail.
If AC3 is lossy (MP3, AAC) and AIFF is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the AIFF is no better than the AC3 — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy AC3 codec. If AC3 is lossless and AIFF is lossy, expect the AIFF encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the AC3 container and written into the equivalent fields on the AIFF container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. AIFF is Apple’s Audio Interchange File Format from 1988, built on the same IFF chunk design as AVI’s RIFF.
Yes — drop a folder of AC3 files in and we process them in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers and no per-file size cap, so a 500-file batch finishes in minutes rather than tens of minutes. Folder structure is preserved in the output ZIP.
By default yes (a 48 kHz AC3 produces 48 kHz AIFF, a 44.1 kHz AC3 produces 44.1 kHz AIFF). For specific compatibility — e.g. downsampling 96 kHz studio masters to 44.1 kHz AIFF for CD burning, or upsampling 22 kHz voicemail to 44.1 kHz AIFF — the sample-rate dropdown applies high-quality SOX-style resampling.
Yes — the loudness-normalize option applies ITU-R BS.1770 / EBU R128 normalization to the AIFF output, targeting -14 LUFS (streaming standard) or -16 LUFS (podcast standard) or a custom value. Useful when batch-converting tracks with varying mastering levels into a single AIFF playlist.
MP3 plays universally on every device made in the last 20 years. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, Sonos, and modern car stereos. FLAC plays on Sonos and recent Android, less well on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but the file is huge. The device-target dropdown picks a safe AIFF codec for the platform you specify.
Yes — uploaded AC3 files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never play, store, or share the audio content. The pipeline runs on hardware we control end-to-end; no third-party services receive your file.

AC3

AC-3 (Dolby Digital) is the surround-sound track used on DVDs and broadcast television, carrying up to six channels.

AIFF

AIFF stores uncompressed audio like WAV but originated on the Mac, and it carries richer metadata tags.
