What is a ZIP archive?

ZIP is a compressed-archive format that bundles many files into one. ZIP is most often used to ship folders of mixed file types in a single download. ZIP is the safe way to hand someone a batch of files: one download, no client software, and per-file extraction.

Does converting a ZIP change the files inside it?

No — the payload is copied through byte for byte. What changes is the wrapper around it: the compression method, the directory structure, and whether the result is one file or several. That matters when a system will only accept one particular archive format, and not at all to the documents, images or media sitting inside. ZIP compresses each file separately with DEFLATE and stores a central directory, so individual members can be extracted without unpacking everything.

Why is ZIP the format everyone at work sends?

Because it is what the software on the machine saves by default, and defaults decide almost everything about which formats spread. The awkward cases are the predictable ones: a recipient on different software, an older version, or a system that only accepts one specific format for upload. Does it matter that ZIP is over thirty years old?

Who controls the ZIP format?
