About ZIP

ZIP is a widely used compression and archive format. ZIP files group a number of files and folders into a single compressed file, reducing storage space and facilitating easier distribution. They are commonly used for file compression and data archiving.

Common Uses

ZIP Conversion FAQ

What is a ZIP archive?
+
ZIP is a compressed-archive format that bundles many files into one. ZIP is most often used to ship folders of mixed file types in a single download. ZIP is the safe way to hand someone a batch of files: one download, no client software, and per-file extraction.
No — the payload is copied through byte for byte. What changes is the wrapper around it: the compression method, the directory structure, and whether the result is one file or several. That matters when a system will only accept one particular archive format, and not at all to the documents, images or media sitting inside. ZIP compresses each file separately with DEFLATE and stores a central directory, so individual members can be extracted without unpacking everything.
Because it is what the software on the machine saves by default, and defaults decide almost everything about which formats spread. The awkward cases are the predictable ones: a recipient on different software, an older version, or a system that only accepts one specific format for upload. All three are one conversion away from working. ZIP is the archive format Phil Katz published in 1989, and it is built into Windows, macOS and every Linux desktop.
Age itself is not the problem — several formats from that era are still perfectly good, precisely because everything has had decades to implement them. What matters is what the era assumed: small files, modest processors, no network, and features nobody needed yet. Where those assumptions still fit, the format is fine. Where they do not, that is the reason to convert.
Nobody, and that is the point of it. The specification is public, anyone may implement it without asking or paying, and no company can change the terms later — which is why archives, standards bodies and public institutions specify formats like this one for anything that still has to open in twenty years. The trade is not compatibility, which is excellent; it is that there is no vendor to call when some tool implements the spec badly.
Yes — drop them in together and they are queued as one job rather than converted one at a time, with the same settings applied across the batch and the results returned together. Free accounts run a couple concurrently; a paid plan lifts both the concurrency and the per-file size limit, which is what makes converting a large archive practical.
Convert ZIP to a different archive when the target system does not support ZIP natively, or when you need stronger compression (7Z) or built-in encryption. ZIP’s per-file compression is less efficient than solid archives, and it stores no useful metadata about what the files are.
Yes — upload a ZIP archive and MKV.to can extract the contents, or convert the whole archive into another format that suits your workflow.
Yes, original modification dates inside the ZIP archive are preserved in the output where the target format supports them.
ZIP supports optional password encryption. MKV.to does not attempt to crack protected archives — you need the password to extract or convert encrypted ZIP.
