Why convert between TXT and Markdown when they are the same kind of file?

Because the file has to open on the other end, and version and vendor differences decide whether it will. Two formats in the same family can still be years apart in what software reads them, how large they are on disk, and which features they carry. The conversion normalises the file onto whichever one the recipient actually supports. TXT is plain text — characters and line breaks with no formatting layer whatsoever. Markdown is the same syntax as .md, spelled out in full — some editors and static site generators expect the long extension.

How long does TXT to Markdown conversion take?

It depends on the size and length of the file. Small documents and images are usually ready quickly. Long videos take the longest, because most video conversions re-encode every frame. The long form is what Jekyll, Hugo and several documentation pipelines look for by default, so it fits straight into those builds. It inherits every Markdown ambiguity — dialect differences around tables, footnotes and raw HTML — with no benefit over .md.
