How do I convert Opus audio to AIFF without losing quality?

Does converting Opus to AIFF improve the audio quality?

No, and it is worth being blunt: nothing can. The Opus already discarded detail during its original encode, and wrapping what remains in a lossless AIFF preserves exactly that — no more. The file gets several times larger and sounds identical. It is still the right move before editing, because AIFF will not add a second generation of artefacts when you export. AIFF is the studio interchange format on macOS, handles metadata better than plain WAV, and imports into Logic and Pro Tools instantly. Opus is almost never supported by standalone hardware — assume software playback only, and expect car stereos to ignore it.
What bitrate does the AIFF file end up at?

Will going from Opus to AIFF actually reduce my audio quality?

If Opus is lossy (MP3, AAC) and AIFF is lossless (WAV, FLAC), the AIFF is no better than the Opus — you cannot recover information already discarded by the lossy Opus codec. If Opus is lossless and AIFF is lossy, expect the AIFF encoder to recompress; at 192 kbps the loss is imperceptible to most ears.
Does the Opus to AIFF converter keep ID3 / metadata tags?

Yes — title, artist, album, year, track number, album art, BPM, replay-gain are read from the Opus container and written into the equivalent fields on the AIFF container. ID3v2 (MP3), Vorbis comments (OGG, FLAC), MP4 atoms (AAC, M4A), RIFF INFO (WAV), iXML chunks all map cleanly. MP3 plays universally on every device made in the last 20 years. AAC plays on Apple, most Android, Sonos, and modern car stereos. FLAC plays on Sonos and recent Android, less well on older iPods. WAV plays on everything but the file is huge. The device-target dropdown picks a safe AIFF codec for the platform you specify. AIFF is as large as WAV with worse support outside the Apple world, so it is a poor choice for distribution.
Is my Opus file private during conversion?

Why is the AIFF file louder or quieter than the Opus source?

No automatic gain change happens unless the normalize option is turned on. If you do hear a level shift, your audio player or media library may be applying ReplayGain or per-track normalization on playback — turn that off and the AIFF sounds bit-identical to the Opus (for lossless) or perceptually identical (for transparent lossy).
