PDF to EPUB Conversion FAQ

How do I convert a PDF file to EPUB?
+
Upload your PDF file using the picker above and the converter detects the source type and runs the PDF -> EPUB pipeline. The result downloads automatically when conversion completes; no account is needed for one-off conversions. PDF is Adobe’s Portable Document Format from 1993, standardised as ISO 32000 and now the universal fixed-layout document. EPUB is the open ebook standard from the International Digital Publishing Forum, now maintained by the W3C.
That is the main thing you gain. A PDF has fixed pages, so a small screen either shrinks the whole page or forces horizontal scrolling. The EPUB stores text as text, so the reader re-wraps it to any screen width and font size. Multi-column layouts and large tables are where reflow struggles — those are the parts worth checking after conversion. EPUB reflows text to any screen size and any font size, which is what makes it readable on a phone as well as an e-reader.
Yes where both formats can express them. Cover art, chapter divisions and a navigable table of contents are structural metadata, so they carry across rather than being flattened into the text. Footnotes and index entries are the fragile parts — they degrade into inline text on targets with no anchor mechanism.
Then the conversion produces a picture of the text rather than the text itself, and searching it finds nothing. Run /pdf-ocr/ to add a recognised text layer first; optical character recognition turns the scanned pixels into selectable, searchable characters that the conversion can then carry through properly.
It depends entirely on whether real text is present. A PDF generated from a document carries an actual text layer and is searchable; a PDF built from scans or images is a picture of text and is not, until OCR adds a layer. /pdf-ocr/ does that, and it is worth running before any conversion that expects to read the words.
Yes — basic PDF -> EPUB conversion is free with no registration. Premium adds higher per-file size limits, more parallel batch workers, and removes ads.
Free accounts: up to 100 MB per PDF file. Premium: typically 1 GB per file, depending on the PDF source type. Very large files get split into chunks server-side when the EPUB format permits.
Conversion preserves every piece of information that both PDF and EPUB can represent. Features the EPUB format cannot store (vector data in raster output, formulas in plain-text output, embedded fonts in image output) are rasterized or stripped — the result page flags any feature loss explicitly. A PDF describes a page with PostScript-derived drawing operators, embedded fonts and embedded images, so the layout is pinned rather than reflowed. An EPUB is a ZIP archive of XHTML and CSS with a manifest — essentially a small website packaged as a book.
Yes — drop multiple PDF files into the upload zone and they queue in parallel. Premium has more parallel workers; on a 50-file batch this is the difference between minutes and seconds.
Yes — the UI is responsive and the conversion pipeline runs server-side, so mobile devices upload-then-download just like desktops. iOS and Android browser file pickers (camera roll, Files app) work end-to-end without an app.
Chrome, Firefox, Safari (15+), Edge, and Opera. The converter uses a plain `<input type="file">` upload — no WebAssembly or PWA dependencies — so even older browsers convert PDF to EPUB successfully.
Yes — uploaded PDF files are processed in isolated workers and deleted within minutes. We never view, retain, or share content. See /privacy/ for the data-retention window. A PDF looks byte-for-byte identical on every machine and every printer, which is why contracts, invoices and academic papers all live in it.

PDF

PDF files preserve formatting across all devices and operating systems, making them ideal for sharing files that need to look the same everywhere.

EPUB

EPUB is classified as a reflowable eBook format that adjusts to different screen sizes and reading preferences.
